About E Gibbons

E Gibbons My black and white figurative art is NOT PHOTOGRAPHY. The original works are monochromatic Oil Paintings on canvas.

The box has become the stage for my modular oil paintings. Each black and white oil stands alone with layering messages from the obvious to the subtle. One painting influences the meaning of its neighbor. I arrange images to convey an allegorical, multi-layered tale. Humor, irony, passion and aggression can be articulated on a single wall. When large numbers of these paintings are displayed together one can have the feeling of looking into the windows of an apartment building, some figures react to others, some seem isolated within their own world.

The impact is similar to the Aids Quilt Project. One panel may be deeply moving and touching, but when seen with counterparts, becomes a larger, more comprehensive statement. Relationships become more evident, larger patterns emerge. I am building on this idea of associations in a more concrete way. Instead of working on one box at a time, I am working in series, within this series, where specific interactions are occurring between boxes/relationships. I have become a painter of Society, and the more boxes I paint the larger that society becomes.

I have purposefully painted all boxes with monochromatic light coming in from the left, so when hanging together, they are cohesive. My dream installation is a single wall of 100 figures. I must admit I have photographed and measured a single wall in MoMA and know it to be possible there. (One must dream big I suppose)
